About Jesse

Jesse MacDonald is a California-based artist working across painting, sculpture, music, and writing. His work explores emotional honesty, memory, family, grief, humor, faith, longing, and the strange tension of being human.

Working primarily from his home studio in Northern California, Jesse creates intuitively and often in large volumes, allowing each piece to emerge through instinct, repetition, and experimentation rather than rigid planning. His paintings combine raw gesture, symbolic imagery, humor, abrasion, tenderness, and vulnerability — often balancing heaviness with play.

Alongside visual art, Jesse maintains an extensive music and writing practice that informs the emotional atmosphere of the work. Across mediums, the through-line remains the same: openness, honesty, tension, and the desire to remain fully human in a world that often rewards performance over truth.

Rather than separating life from art, Jesse approaches creativity as part of daily living — an ongoing process of attention, feeling, and discovery.

His work has been shown in galleries, private collections, studios, markets, and independent spaces throughout California.

The Work

The work moves between contradiction: tenderness and abrasion, humor and grief, play and heaviness, chaos and care.

Some pieces arrive quickly and instinctively. Others develop over long periods through layering, revision, destruction, and rebuilding. Across painting, sculpture, music, and writing, the work is less concerned with perfection than with emotional accuracy.

At its center is a search for what feels alive, recognizable, and honest.
